Landscape Mulch
Organic Biodegradable Alternative
to Plastic Film and Fabric |
EcoCover organic biodegradable mulch
mat made mainly from waste paper is an ideal alternative
to plastic film and woven landscape fabric for the
environmentally astute landscaper. EcoCover does
an exceptional job of reducing new planting mortality,
conserving soil moisture, moderating soil temperatures,
improving plant growth and suppressing weeds.
These claims are all proven by independently conducted
university research and the experience of landscapers
around the world.

Here is a landscape mulch project
conducted by the Auckland Council (local government
body) in New Zealand using EcoCover as an under-layment
for new plantings along the edge of a public garden and
park area. The EcoCover was covered with a
decorative bark mulch.

Roadway landscaping is always a
challenge due to the heat island effect of adjacent
paved surfaces. In New Zealand past highway
landscaping mulched with plastic or landscape fabric has
mostly failed over time to create plantings that thrive
for the long term.
In the Auckland suburb of Remuera, a
roundabout or traffic circle was mulched with EcoCover
standard Mulch Mat with plantings made through the mat
and then mulched with a decorative bark cover.
First season growth was vigorous.
Note the lack of weeds and the growth progress of the
plants.
Six months later the plants have
matured nicely and the EcoCover mulch continues to keep
the landscape free of weeds.
Nine months later the landscaping has
matured to provide its own shading for weeds and
continues to thrive. EcoCover has also been used
for numerous riparian re-vegetation projects.
Restoration of eroded and disturbed
soils is an ideal EcoCover landscape mulch application.
As the new plantings mature and other surrounding
vegetation returns EcoCover gradually biodegrades into
soil humus, there is nothing to take up, nothing to
throw away.

Steep embankments are no problem for
EcoCover. Here this 200 foot long 35 degree bank
was mulched with EcoCover to both prevent erosion and
control weeds while new landscape plants get a solid
start.
Ladders were used for the safety of
the landscapers and to prevent damage to the EcoCover
while it was being laid.
EcoCover Weed Squares are an ideal
way to set out trees and shrubs dispersed over a large
area. For existing plantings, EcoCover can be cut
and laid through a combination of pinning and in some
cases taping of overlapping seams.
In these photos EcoCover was used to
replace about 2-1/2 acres of black plastic in a native
plant garden. Decorative bark was laid over the
EcoCover landscape mulch.
The end result is a native habitat
that looks natural. As the plants mature, EcoCover
will biodegrade into the soil.
Here is another Weed Square planting
of new trees in existing grass where the surrounding
landscape is relatively undisturbed by the mulch.
EcoCover Weed Squares as landscape
mulch does an excellent job of conserving soil moisture
and keeping weed growth down around new plantings.
