It continually amazes me how many people visit my website saying something like "I have a new website online and I want to optimize it for increased rankings and organic traffic" when their new online venture has not previously been researched or evaluated for the opportunity for success.

The same small business internet marketing research techniques used for search engine optimization and earning rankings can help a new online business or a small business planning on marketing their goods and services online to determine internet searcher interest in their new venture and the strength of the competition in their market.  Why go into business without evaluating your market when you have a way to quickly evaluate your approach to your market and plan your online entry accordingly?

What Are They Searching For?

The first step in Internet marketing research is to determine what your prospective customers are searching for regarding your goods or services.  You can do some of this work yourself using the Google external keywords tool which is helpful for determining volume of searches any place in the world Google has a search engine for the market.

It often happens that your very best opportunities for ranking success come from long tail (more than 2-3-4 word) search phrases that are not highly targeted by your prospective competitors.

How Strong Is Your Competition?

The other factors are called "off page" factors which have to do with things like the time your website has been online.  Inbound links aka links to your website from other websites is one of the major factors with Google which is why, once your website goes online, you need a good link building program.

Search, Bing and Ask received 14.43 percent, 9.86 percent and 2.32 percent, respectively. The remaining 70 search engines in the Hitwise Search Engine Analysis Tool accounted for 1.94 percent of U.S. searches. If you want traffic, you have to make Google work for you.

There are a number of simple things that you need to do to assure your local market search success, most of which are commonly overlooked by website designers who are not familiar with search engine optimization.  Why put your website online without these important things being included in your website when you have a choice?
